For a decade I sat in my poster covered bedroom in a small Northern town and drew comic strips that could take me away. An instamatic camera was donated to me but film was very precious, a nine year old doesn't mind shooting with no film inside. The heroes in those posters changed all the time. Nowadays I make those posters.

I found myself in the Royal Marines at sixteen years old. The camera had to be swapped for a rifle but at impromptu moments, there was always time for a quick photo session, with ever willing subjects. There were often strange and even beautiful locations in spite of the danger. The most insane moments in those years, weren't caught on film but now and again I use them as references, with a few less casualties and a little more theatre.

At Seventeen, I was sent to play a tiny part in a desert war and I was able to afford my first SLR camera. For an unknown reason, a huge box of fashion magazines arrived from the UK and I spent hours picking out my favourite images to keep. Those pin-ups followed us wherever we went like faithful lovers.

I'm not sure if the Marines was a good premise for what I do now, but lying for months in waterlogged ditches staring down gun-sights, while your buddy talcum powders his gonads, does beg the statement 'I gotta meet more women'. And within a few years of those situations, I'm goofing around on a foreign beaches with a camera, naked fashion models and budgets to create sexy pictures. It became apparent where I'd much rather be, and I've been riding the wave ever since.

Needless to say, I love the job. To open a small window on a world that will only exist until the lights are packed away or when the set is unscrewed. What is seen by all, is the result of a creative collaboration that has focussed the resources of a greatly talented team that started the day with only possibilities. It's a great pleasure to have a set of images to serve as a reminder of a world we inhabited on a particular date. Though I treat every shoot with sincere professionalism, I can't deny the fact they are a hell of a lot of fun. It's all about dressing up and acting sexy. The models that is, I restrain myself and concentrate on composition, lighting and other such matters. To maintain the energy and momentum on a shoot is important to me and prove to be the best ingredients for the image. I couldn't shoot in a quiet uncluttered studio, taking hours to get just one element of one image 'right', whatever that means. This doesn't mean I'm not trying to get the perfect image, but sometimes imperfection is perfect. Often, everything within the frame has been planned and sketched but there are times you just get together with someone you've never met before, and play with different ideas for a few hours. From chaos, and not deliberating too much, the best images are formed. If it's a good day a subject will bring their own personal insanity to the shoot for us to pick at and choose from. There's very few jobs outside medicine and prostitution where so many people take their clothes off for you. I enjoy this privilege and honour, and accentuate their beauty in return. It's a trust that when it all comes together, I'll produce something unique and special to make that short lived love affair worthwhile.

Some of the created scenarios shown here are magical interludes and others are an excuse to dance, pose and get naked. Fortunately, there's a market for both, and I'm very happy to supply that market. Beats the hell outta' sitting in a trench.
